Over the next two and a half years tanc will provide free support to 34 projects.
This will involve support for community groups and businesses, the development of community
services and facilities, education and training, and widespread consultation with local
residents within each project area.
The support we will provide includes:
Demand. tanc is the only independent regeneration consultancy providing free services to voluntary/community groups in the East Midlands. The rise in demand for our services enabled tanc to secure funding in June 2000 to enable us to expand our service from just 2 wards of Nottingham to cover the whole of the city and county of Nottinghamshire. From June 2000 to June 2001 we had 25 requests for assistance. Of these, 10 required a small amount of advice and support (3 months) and 15 required longer-term support (6-12months). After the first year of working throughout the City and County of Nottinghamshire, without any extensive marketing of our services, demand is outstripping ability to supply. Complimentary services. Services, that are often key to ensuring the effectiveness of our input, have reduced across the city and county e.g. community development and youth work. In addition, in 2001 we worked hard to develop an extensive network of contacts with other relevant organisations including: Nottinghamshire Rural Community Council (NRCC); The Coalfield Regeneration Trust; Waste Recycling Environment Ltd; Bassetlaw Council for Voluntary Services; Newark and Sherwood Council for Voluntary Services; VOSE; Ashfield Links Forum; Greater Nottingham Groundwork Trust and Business in the Community. All of these organisations have endorsed the need for the service and will be referring relevant projects as and when appropriate. Requirements of Funders. A number of major funders are requesting increasingly complex information to accompany funding bids, particularly for capital projects. The Community Fund recently published information on reasons for rejecting applications (April 2000-march 2001). 27% of applications failed because they were not well planned. Other weaknesses such as "project does not respond to a clearly defined need" and "project is not well costed" were also frequently recorded for these projects. Due to the increasing number of requests for support for building based projects tanc has developed a building training programme that enables us to work with more groups whilst still addressing the issues raised by the Community Fund. Two building training events, organised by tanc in 2001, on behalf of the Nottinghamshire Rural Community Council, were completely over subscribed, with 70 participants attending. Project Management Since it was established in 1991 tanc has been managed by a voluntary management committee consisting of representatives from supportive organisations, from the public and private sector, with some representation also from the groups who have been in receipt of tanc's services. Management committee members have skills that are highly relevant to the development of the organisation as they each bring with them their individual experiences as architects, solicitor, accountant, community development worker, and managers/directors of not for profit companies and voluntary organisations. tanc's services are delivered by a multi-skilled team of 5 whose collective skills and experience include urban design, architecture, community consultation and research, energy efficiency, project management, fundraising, ICT and web design. tanc is committed to providing training and development opportunities for staff and volunteers to ensure we are able to provide the services required by users. In addition, to enable any gaps in skills to be plugged, tanc has recently developed a policy to engage 'associates' on a contractual basis, as and when required. Funding Strategy The ability of tanc to offer an independent and free service is vitally important to both the project and it's clients. To allow grass roots organisations free access, without statutory funder's constraints and control, tanc has decided to pursue the majority of funds from politically independent sources. Recently tanc has received charitable status and this has opened up a number of new potential funders. Any shortfall in funds will be covered by fee -paying work.
